ACC is not perplexed about the TIB corruption report
Thursday, June 19 2008.

The Anticorruption Commission Thursday described the TIB report on corruption as not perplexing to the commission.

"The report was not meant to undermine any organisation. It is constructive. The ACC has started work to assess whether corruption has increased or come down after 1/11," ACC director general Hanif Iqbal said in a press briefing. He added that "the commission will be working following its own methods and will not be run by the planning of any other institution".

"The ACC does not believe corruption will disappear overnight using Aladin's Lamp. It is not possible for any agency alone to free the country of corruption. It requires a collective effort."

The ACC will intensify its work on "highly corrupt organisations" on the basis of the report released Wednesday by Transparency International Bangladesh. But he disagreed with another remark by the chairman of the TIB's board of trustees that the ACC had no plan for future. "ACC has many plans against the spread of corruption in future in the country," Iqbal said.

Asked about TIB's suggestions to strengthen ACC's anti-graft drives, he said the commission would try to incorporate the suggestions to its activities.

Replying to a question, he, however, said that the ACC is not against the TIB Report.

In a news briefing, ACC director general Colonel Hanif Iqbal said the chargesheetws would be submitted to court soon.

Allegations against Altaf involve acquisition of Tk 1.53 crore in illicit wealth and concealing information on property worth Tk 55.6 lakh.

Morshed Khan and wife Nasrin Khan stand accused of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 1.67 crore through unclear sources and concealing information about Tk 91.36 lakh worth of property.

Besides, the ACC approved a chargesheet in a case involving misappropriation of Tk 79.48 lakh against three persons including Kamaluddin Ahmed, former deputy director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Media has been 'used' to spread resignation rumor: ACC Chief
Sunday, June 15, 2008.

Anticorruption Commission chairman Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury said Sunday the media had been 'used' to spread rumours that he was stepping down.

"The media have been used to spread the rumours. You know better who did it and why?" the ACC boss said to reporters, when he was heading home from work.

"We will keep you posted on whatever we do. It's a long way to go. I hope nobody will obstruct our way. Our drive against corruption will go on."

"We will complete our mission in a collective effort."

Chowdhury came back home on June 10 after a month-long private tour of Australia, New Zealand and UAE, accompanied by his wife.

Several newspapers published reports on his "resignation" when he was abroad. Later, the commission rubbished the reports as baseless.

Asked to comment on the release of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, he said: "As I know, everything went through a legal procedure."
